It could have been us

A JOURNEY BACK IN TIME

In a used camper van, Emma and Ida from Glada Hudik Theater set out on the road with founder Pär Johansson to find out what it was like to live with an intellectual disability in another time. A time when Sweden was a world leader in racial research and where terrible experiments were carried out at Vipeholmsanstalten. During their journey, Emma, Ida and Pär are helped by experts such as Ola Larsmo, Elin Bommenel and Kalle Lind. The film is a story about history, but also about a journey filled with courage and joy.

WE DEMONSTRATE FOR A WARMER AND MORE INCLUSIVE SWEDEN

We are proud that Helsingborg is one of the twelve cities that are part of the national manifestation, helping to keep the collective memory alive. It is a history that should never be forgotten and events that took place locally that we never want to repeat. Helsingborg is a city for everyone to live and work in. It is a place for everyone to visit. No matter who you are. The film is the start of a grassroots movement around the country where we are encouraged to look at our surroundings, reflect on exclusion and how we can contribute to a more inclusive environment where we are. At home, at work, with friends and in society at large. In connection with the film’s premiere, information will also be sent to Swedish schools where the film will be shown and educate future leaders about a history that must never be repeated. To manifest the message, several of us are working on the project and helping to spread the word around the city.

It could have been us

In Helsingborg, we want to encourage everyone to be more inclusive, eradicate prejudice, and inspire more people to dare to take their place in our city. Below you can see nine people who dared. These brave individuals are the face of our local manifestation and great sources of inspiration to dare to show up, just as you are.Get to know our nine amazing role models who work at Ateljé City on a daily basis.

Linda

My name is Linda. I would like to introduce a full day of Friday fun – dancing, movies, pizza and lots of goodies! For me, the most important thing in a friend is to be kind and humble, someone who shows empathy. I am so much fun, a real party princess and always have an answer. My fondest memories are all the parties and Christmases with grandma, grandpa, grandma and grandpa, they were always there and made everything a little better. In my spare time I love music and soap operas 80-90s music. If I won 100 000 SEK on Lotto I would buy ice cream, chips, Nutella, Ben & Jerry’s and book a cruise to the USA. My biggest idol is Westlife, the whole band! If I were an animal, I would be a lion, both because of my hot temper and because it is my star sign.

Ida

My name is Ida and I am 46 years old. I love shopping! The most beautiful place I know is Helsingborg – you can really relax there. The best thing about me is that I am kind, my nicest memory is my dad’s jewelry with his fingerprints – I always wear it in a necklace. In my spare time, I love to go dancing at Friskis & Svettis, work out at home and take long walks. If I could have dinner with anyone I would choose Elvis, he is my biggest idol – no surprise there! I’d also like to learn to ride a bike, but balance is not my strong point. If I ended up on a desert island, I’d take my sister, my guardian and my companion. And the best thing about being photographed? That I will be seen in town, of course!

Robin

My name is Robin and I am 24 years old. I love singing, dancing, bowling, playing Playstation and eating really good food. I am always cheerful, caring and helpful – a real spreader of joy! My best memory is from China with my mom, it’s something I’ll never forget. Would I get 100 000 SEK? That’s easy! I would buy more costumes and new clothes. My biggest idols are Minesh Dissanayake, John Lennon and Elvis – really cool people. I would also like to learn to talk more, sing more and play the guitar. The best thing about being photographed is that I feel like a celebrity, just like Minem or Corey Gray!

Susanne

My name is Susanne and I am 39. If I had to decide everything for one day, I would definitely ride a horse, maybe on a beach in Crete – it’s the most beautiful place I know. I’m actually good at everything, but especially sewing and riding! One of my fondest memories is of grilling sausages in the forest, on one of those perfect days. On a desert island I would take my mom and dad, they are the best. Work always makes me happy, but I get angry when someone looks at my boyfriend. Yes I would like to invite Tess to dinner, we would have such a good time.

Otherwise

My name is Anders, I’m 59 years old and if I had to decide everything for one day, I would go straight to Ullared. And why would I do that? To bargain, of course! I’m kind and happy – that’s actually the best thing about me – and I think that’s the most important quality in a friend too. In my spare time I like to be at home, maybe eat some apple pie, which by the way is my best memory. With 100,000 SEK I would buy a new car – maybe something to practice driving in, because I really want to learn to drive someday. If I were an animal? Then I’d be a cow, mostly because they say “moo”.

Nora

My name is Nora and I’m 33 years old. I would like to take a basic course in nutrition – because it’s actually important to know what we put into our bodies. The most beautiful place I know is a forest where the sun shines through the leaves, it’s like nature is hugging you. In my spare time I love to create – painting, drawing, sewing – it’s when I get to be creative that I feel most alive. My biggest idol is Astrid Lindgren, no one has inspired me like her. If I were an animal I would be a wild boar, they take care of each other like a real family, a bit like a kindergarten for wild boar babies! What I want to learn now is to get a driver’s license, that would be amazing. I think it’s important to shine a little, be in the spotlight!

Fredrik

My name is Fredrik and I’m 31. The most beautiful place I know is without a doubt Villa Villekulla – imagine living there! I would like to spend a whole day in Astrid Lindgren’s World, among all the fun characters My best memory is when I saw Karlsson on the roof for the first time – what a guy, he’s fantastic! In my spare time I like to go bowling I would love to learn to drive a truck, it seems really fun. And if I ended up on a desert island? I’d take Pippi, Karlsson and Emil with me – we’d be busy having fun. That always makes me happy, but I definitely don’t want to be scared. And the best thing about being photographed? Looking straight into the camera and saying “cheese”!

Linn

My name is Linn and I’m 27 years old. If I could decide everything for one day, I would probably like to rent the whole of Liseberg and invite all my friends – think what fun we would have! My fondest memory is when my mom and dad came home from the hospital with my little sister. In my spare time, I love listening to music and watching movies – preferably Melodifestivalen! If I could have dinner with anyone, I would choose Lady Gaga, her voice is amazing. If I were an animal, I would be a fox, because… well, “What does the fox say?” I would like to learn a bit more about singing and music, maybe become as good as my idols. When my little siblings tease me, I get really angry! I would describe myself as a Mello expert, happy and a real showgirl. And the best thing about being photographed? It’s so much fun to be in the center!

Anette

My name is Anette and I am 47 years old. My biggest idol is Hasse Andersson. The most beautiful place I know is the beach – it’s always calm, just the way I like it. In my spare time, I like to make diamond paintings – it’s like therapy. If I could have dinner with anyone, I would choose my sister who passed away when I was 15. I would like to get to know her for real. If I won 100,000 kronor, I would use it to adapt a house for the disabled, so that everyone can feel at home. I would love to develop my cooking – there is always something new to learn!

Spread the word!

School materials for learning

Both Lgr22 and Gy11 emphasize the importance of schools promoting fundamental values such as the equal value of all people. Schools should also promote understanding of other people, the ability to empathize, and be characterized by openness and respect for people’s differences. In addition, all forms of discrimination or abusive treatment should be actively discouraged. Here, the movie It could have been us can be a good tool together with our teacher’s guide. We need to tell the story to the adults of the future. We need to teach the future leaders of our city. For the right decisions to be made, not only now but also later.

Care

Work material for staff working in the LSS field. You have the freedom to be creative and put your own stamp on what is taught. Don’t let old traditions or standard solutions limit you from creating something truly engaging.

The peer card

The buddy card allows you to take a buddy to different activities such as sports, cinema and museums at no extra cost. It can be a good and fun way to try new activities when you are two people sharing the experience. To get the buddy card, you must live in Helsingborg municipality and have some form of support within LSS, the Act on Support and Service for Certain Disabled Persons. The peer card is valid within the activities and associations that have joined Helsingborg’s peer card. Depending on your age, the card is also valid for certain activities run by Fritid Helsingborg, such as leisure centers and camps during school holidays.
